Jeb Bush finally got to answer the hottest new question to ask of the GOP presidential field: Would you attend the gay wedding of a friend or family member?
“I haven’t–that’s not to say I wouldn’t, if people that I cared for were going to be married, of course I would go if they asked me to go,” Bush told reporters in Puerto Rico. He then repeated his answer in Spanish–“Claro que sí.” (“Yes of course.”)
Bush affirmed that he believes “in traditional marriage,” after BuzzFeed reported that he might position himself as 2016’s “gay-friendly” Republican.
Fusion first asked Marco Rubio whether he would attend a gay wedding. “If it’s somebody in my life that I care for, of course I would,” he replied. Hugh Hewitt then asked a series of other likely and declared candidates where they stood.
Ted Cruz evaded the question–although he recently talked about how he would still love his daughter were she gay–Rick Santorum was a hearty “no,” and Rick Perry “probably” would attend.
Scott Walker also told reporters he had already attended the wedding reception of a gay couple. “Even though my position on marriage is still that its defined as between a man and a woman, and I support the constitution of the state but for someone I love, we’ve been to a reception.”
