District receives grant for watershed restoration

The District received a $500,000 grant to restore a tributary of the Anacostia River as part of an effort to reduce pollution to the Chesapeake Bay. The D.C. Department of the Environment will use the grant to restore the 1.75-mile stream, the Watts Branch, by planting 28 acres of vegetation along the banks. Also planned are projects that would relocate sanitary sewer stream crossings; rehabilitate the Marvin Gaye hiking and biking trails; and revitalize Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue.
