Neera Tanden, president of a liberal think tank and longtime confidante of Hillary Clinton, took to Twitter on Tuesday night after Republican Karen Handel won the special election in Georgia to express her frustration with recent political contests ending with the Democrats defeated.
“One important lesson is that when they go low, going high doesn’t f**king work,” Tanden tweeted. The tweet is a reference to a line delivered by former first lady Michelle Obama at the 2016 Democratic convention, and adopted by Clinton during the 2016 campaign: “When they go low, we go high.”

Tanden then tweeted multiple responses to followers who were commenting on her heated tweet.

Tanden is president of the Center for American Progress. She previously served as policy director for Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2008 and for her senatorial campaign in New York. She also worked in the Obama administration.
