Ex-Democratic Pennsylvania attorney general, already on probation, charged with DUI

Former Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol while still on probation for convictions related to her resignation from office.

Kane, a Democrat, was involved in a two-car crash Saturday evening around 6:30 p.m. and released on “general impairment DUI charges,” Scranton Police Chief Thomas Carroll said. No one was injured during the incident, and police will file formal charges this week, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Police declined to say if Kane’s blood alcohol content was measured.

Formerly Pennsylvania’s top prosecutor, Kane resigned and was eventually disbarred following her 2016 convictions on charges of perjury and official oppression related to her leaking of grand jury documents. She reported for her sentence of 10 to 23 months in November 2018 after the state’s superior court upheld her conviction. Kane was released eight months later in 2019 for good behavior but is still serving out five years of probation. How her probation will affect or be affected by the DUI charges is unclear.

Kane was elected Pennsylvania’s attorney general in 2012 and was considered a contender for higher office until the scandal derailed her career. She leaked grand jury material connected to a political rival’s corruption investigation into a former head of Philadelphia’s NAACP and then lied about her involvement in the leak while under oath.

The Scranton Police Department did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
