Yeas & Nays has learned that heavyweight, ear-biting champ Mike Tyson is among the many legendary boxers who have been invited to attend Fight For Children’s 21st Annual Fight Night on Thursday at the Washington Hilton. The fellas’ event Fight Night occurs on the same night as the gals’ gala, Knock Out Abuse — which raises money for victims of domestic violence.
After both events, the sexes come together for a joint after party (which could get awkward if Tyson attends).
Last year, Tyson’s ex-wife, Robin Givens, was honored at Knock Out Abuse. “I didn’t understand how a man could say that the best punch he ever threw was against his wife,” Givens said of Tyson.
Fight For Children official Jeff Travers says he doesn’t think Tyson attending Fight Night would be a problem, since it’s raising money for the education of low-income kids.
“Mike Tyson is one of the greatest legends in boxing history. Over the years, many of our loyal guests have asked us to bring him to Fight Night, and we were able to extend an invitation to him this year,” Travers said. “Obviously, Tyson has made many mistakes in his life. However, he has owned up to them and atoned for his behavior, which makes us comfortable asking him to participate.”
Travers said Tyson was out of the country Monday and that the former champ has not said whether he’ll attend. Attempts to reach Tyson’s manager Monday evening weren’t successful. The founders of Knock Out Abuse weren’t available for comment.
