Changes at Avenel

On most holes at Avenel, greens and tees are in relatively the same locations. These are the exceptions:

Hole No. 6

Hole converted from a par 5 to par 4. The green was shifted from the right side of Rock Run to the left. It now measures a staunch 493 yards.

Result »  Hole has gone from gimmicky to one of the best on the course.

Hole No. 9

Greg Norman will be happy to discover that the hole he suggested should “be blown up,” finally has. The green, formerly a 60-foot drop from the tee, now sits on the hillside, further left.

Result »  Dramatic change for the better. Now a gentile 20-foot drop to green.

Hole No. 10

Hole converted from par 4 to par 5. Green used on the former par 3 No. 11 now serves as green at No. 10, a reachable, risk/reward 564-yard, dogleg left, par 5.

Result »  Significantly different hole, especially from the elevated back tee, where sloped fairway appears tiny.

Hole No. 11

Former No. 12, a long par 4, identified by many pros as their favorite hole, remains similar, but will be tougher than before because of Rock Run’s wider stream bed that narrows the fairway.

Result »  Good hole made tougher with less room to blast away from tee.

Hole No. 12

Former No. 13, a par 5, has been converted to two holes. No. 12 is a par 3 with the same tee as the old No. 13, but a green perched at the top of a hill, formerly the 13th fairway.

Result »  Green complex falls away on all sides, but is wide, accessible, and not difficult to hit from the back tees (171 yards). Perhaps Avenel’s easiest par 3.

Hole No. 13

Par 4 with a downhill shot to fairway and uphill approach to a tiny green on this 366-yard hole. Green perched above site of former No. 13 green, near No. 14 tee.

Result »  Interesting hole that will require two on-target shots. Long hitters will use iron-wedge.
