Did they steal any hand towels? The Salahis case the Blue Room. (white house)
Ugh. There is so much wrong with this story.
First, these grasping, ridiculous, wanna-be reality TV stars breached security at the White House to crash the state dinner. They embarrassed the Secret Service, who are some of the hardest-working individuals in Washington — and now it turns out that yeah, they got close enough to President Obama to cause some trouble if they wanted to. They met him in the receiving line!
The blog can totally see how they could have snuck in. Security is intense at the White House but it’s more about checking for hidden weapons than facetious guests, although the service does tend to check a guest list pretty scrupulously. But with all the cameras and celebs and madness and rainy weather last Tuesday — a sneak is not incomprehensible.
And as many ladies of a certain bravura could tell you, with the right outfit and a little attitude, you can pretty much get in anywhere (especially if you’re blonde).
But here’s the thing — if Michaele and Tareq Salahi had crashed the dinner on a lark — because they love Obama, or live for danger, or just wanted to get dressed up and go out somewhere — it might have been slightly different. But doing it all for the cameras as part of an audition for a Bravo reality series? Tacky, vulgar, really offensive. Honest people are probably going to lose their jobs over this. And why? So that polo-playing socialites can expose themselves on cable?
From the NY Daily News:
The spotlight-loving spouses posted party snaps on Facebook that show them cozying up to CBS anchor Katie Couric and Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty.
“The White House Marines welcome Michaele to the State Dinner,” read the caption on a photo of the blonde ex-cheerleader posing with three smiling leathernecks.
A lawyer for the polo-loving pair insisted the Salahis did nothing wrong – and suggested their 15 minutes aren’t over.
“My clients were cleared by the White House to be there,” Paul Gardner told Washington Life magazine. “We will make them available to the media starting next week.”
Apparently the pair could face criminal charges because it’s a felony to lie to a federal agent. But first: Larry King Live!
Rule #46 — Don’t crash a party where these guys work. (honda/getty)
