American Beauty
No sooner did we walk down to the ballroom of the Hyatt Regency for the Democrat campaign committees’ election watch party on Tuesday night than we ran into Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir.
The bearded veteran of many a “long, strange trip” is in town with his band Ratdog, for a two-night stint at the Warner Theatre that concludes tonight. And wouldn’t you know, the Democrats were happy to get him a ticket. “I couldn’t miss the opportunity,” he told Yeas & Nays.
So did Weir have any big party plans after Barack Obama’s win? “Just going back to my hotel after this,” he said. How times have changed.
Also spotted: Art Smith, the former personal chef to Oprah Winfrey. Smith recently opened the new Art & Soul restaurant next door at the Liaison Hotel, and was seen milling about the Democrats’ buffet snacking on nachos.
And late in the evening, we couldn’t help but think the Dems were doing a little musical needling of Republicans, as they pumped in Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” over the P.A. A raucous sing-along ensued to the song that has long been a fixture at Republican rallies.
Next up from the deejay booth: Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”
