Sprinter Holston leaves his mark

In his first major competition of the outdoor track season, Lee junior Sean Holston again showed why he is one of the top sprinters in the country.

The reigning Group AAA state indoor champion in the 300-meter dash easily won at 100 meters in a time of 10.74 at the annual Allen Johnson Invitational, hosted by Lake Braddock last Saturday.

Holston finished well ahead of Osbourn Park freshman Devin Edwards and Robinson junior Maurice Thompson (11:35). He is now poised to have a tremendous postseason in just his second year competing in outdoor track.

Holston already set two records at the region indoor meet in the 55 (6.38) and the 300 (34.60). He also won the 55 (6.37) and the 300 (33.94) at the state indoor meet and ran what was the second-fastest time in the country in the 300 (33.94). Holston was third at the Nike Indoor Nationals (6.33) in the 55.

Another athlete making her first outdoor appearance of the season at the Allen Johnson Invitational was W.T. Woodson All-Examiner junior Sarrah Hadiji. Hadiji, also participating in just her second outdoor track season, won the 3,200 (10:53.92) and broke her personal record just two months after winning the state indoor title at that distance (11:02.26), where she had set that record. Hadiji improved with each performance during last year’s outdoor season, culminating in a region-best time of 11:03.39 at last year’s region meet and a third-place finish at the state outdoor meet in11:04.32.
