A 24-year-old police officer was killed Thursday in a three-vehicle crash.
The Henrico County Police Division announced Thursday the death of Officer Trey Marshall Sutton on Facebook. Sutton died in the hospital Thursday morning following the Wednesday crash on Route 301.
“Today, officers are shrouding their badges to honor the officer who passed away while colleagues and family supported one another at a local hospital,” the post reads.
The department hired Sutton in June 2021. Sutton had just graduated from the basic police academy last month.
“This is a tragedy for everyone, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved. God bless Officer Sutton for his chosen profession — law enforcement and commitment to Henrico County,” Henrico Police Chief Eric D. English said. “Sutton was a well-respected member of his recent academy class.”
“The First Lady and I are heartbroken by the loss of Henrico Police Officer and Chesterfield resident Trey Marshall Sutton,” Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said in a statement. “This tragedy serves as a constant reminder that our men and women in blue put their lives on the line everyday to protect their communities.”
Stafford County Sheriff David P. Decatur shared his condolences on Facebook, sharing a photo of his shrouded badge. Counties across the state followed suit.

Two others were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries: an officer Sutton was riding with and the man the two officers were transporting. This crash is under investigation, according to the police division.
