Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won her reelection bid to stay in Congress, beating Republican challenger Tina Forte in an expected midterm win in New York’s 14th District.
Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, is considered to be one of the most progressive Democrats in Congress, known for being very vocal regarding women’s and LGBT rights, climate change, and criminal justice reform. She became the youngest female member of the House of Representatives in 2018 at 29 years old and continues to be the youngest representative.
She has gained recent attention for calling out people in her own party as well, saying that the Democratic Party is “overwhelmingly from one generation.” She also warned voters of an “environment of fascism,” comparing recent incidents of voter intimidation to the United States’ history of voter suppression.
AOC’s win against Forte was not surprising, as she beat out her 2020 Republican opponent 71.6% to 27.4% for leadership of one of the country’s most diverse districts.
Multiple reports have pegged her as one of the Democratic Party’s potential 2024 presidential candidates, but she has declined to comment on whether she would run.

When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June, she attended the protests in front of the Supreme Court and rallies in the days following, demanding that fellow members of Congress take action to protect reproductive healthcare products.
She also spoke to GQ about her sexual assault experience, stating it spurred her desire to run for public office, as well as intimidation and verbal abuse from Republican lawmakers such as Florida Rep. Ted Yoho, who called her “disgusting” in 2020, and Rep. Paul Gosar, who the House censored after he posted a video that showed him killing Ocasio-Cortez.
