Arson suspected at mosque of Orlando shooter

A fire broke out early Monday morning at the Florida mosque where the Pulse nightclub shooter worshipped, according to investigators.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Maj. David Thompson told reporters that the fire at Islamic Center of Fort Pierce is being treated as arson.

Thompson said investigators found surveillance video showing someone approaching the east side of the Islamic Center just before the fire.

“Immediately after the individual approached, a flash occurred and the individual fled the area,” he said.

A 911 call at around 12:30 a.m. on Monday alerted authorities that flames were coming out of the Islamic Center.

The mosque is where Omar Mateen, the now-dead shooter in the Orlando massacre at Pulse nightclub, prayed and worshipped.

The sheriff’s office has asked the FBI and U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to join the investigation, which is being led by local authorities and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

There were no injuries reported. The extent of the damage has not yet been determined.
