Nancy Pelosi bashes GOP as ‘enablers’ of Russian meddling

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday labeled Republican lawmakers as “enablers” of the “Trump-Russia assault” on the United States.

Pelosi also called for Jared Kushner, a senior adviser to Trump and his son-in-law, to lose his security clearance after news emerged about a meeting between Donald Trump, Jr. and a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin.

Kicking off her weekly press conference, Pelosi, D-Calif., called the first days back from the Fourth of July recess a “very interesting week” before going after the president’s eldest son. She said that news of his meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya was “cold hard evidence” the campaign “eagerly intended” to collude with the Russians.

“Republicans in Congress have become enablers of the Trump-Russia assault on our democracy. After these latest revelations, it has become clear that we have suffered a desecration of our democracy not seen since Watergate,” Pelosi said.

“We want the truth,” Pelosi said, reiterating her call for an outside independent commission to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

Pelosi took specific aim at Trump, Jr.’s claim that any campaign would have taken the meeting as campaigns are looking for a leg up and for opposition research.

“That’s not how it works,” Pelosi said, saying also that if you get, “food from a poisonous tree,” you call the FBI.

Pelosi said Kushner, who was in the meeting with Trump Jr., should have his security clearance revoked.

She added that she’s not calling for him to be fired; she just wants him to follow the law.

“The GOP must hold Kushner accountable for the false statements on his national security disclosure form and … his security clearance must be revoked immediately,” she said.
