Chicago Tribune endorses Gary Johnson to ‘rebuke’ Republicans and Democrats

The Chicago Tribune’s editorial board endorsed Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson, reasoning that now is the time to “rebuke” both Republicans and Democrats.

“This is the moment to look at the candidates on this year’s ballot,” the paper said Friday. “This is the moment to see this election as not so much about them as about the American people and where their country is heading. And this is the moment to rebuke the Republican and Democratic parties.”

The Tribune said GOP nominee Donald Trump is “not fit” to be president, and while “undeniably capable,” Democrat Hillary Clinton’s “intent to greatly increase federal spending and taxation, and serious questions about honesty and trust” disqualify her.

Clinton is also “a corner-cutter whose ambitions drive her decisions,” the paper said.

The Tribune said that Johnson and his running mate William Weld “are agile, practical and, unlike the major-party candidates, experienced at managing governments.”

Johnson is polling at about 7 percent nationally, according to the RealClearPolitics average.
