Cruz bashes same-sex marriage decision

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is not pleased with the U.S. Supreme Court’s latest move on same-sex marriage.

The Republican slammed the Supreme Court’s decision to not take up same-sex marriage appeals in five states Monday, calling it “tragic and indefensible” in a statement.

“The Supreme Court’s decision to let rulings by lower court judges stand that redefine marriage is both tragic and indefensible,” the senator said in his statement released late Monday night. “By refusing to rule if the states can define marriage, the Supreme Court is abdicating its duty to uphold the Constitution.”

Cruz also added he would be introducing a new constitutional amendment when Congress returns to session “to prevent the federal government or the courts from attacking or striking down state marriage laws.”

On Monday, the justices decided against hearing challenges to state level decisions that overturned same-sex marriages in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin — allowing couples to go to the court house for marriage licenses in short order. The decision also paved the way for six more states to legalize same-sex marriage.

“This is judicial activism at the worst,” he said, saying the decision will now “force” 11 new states to recognize same-sex marriage.
