Joaquin Castro won’t run for Senate

Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro will not run for Senate, clearing the Democratic field in the Lone Star State’s 2018 election for Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

Castro announced on Facebook Monday he feels his best role in Congress is to serve in the House.

“I’ve kept my pledge to fight for hard-working Texans, and I’ll keep doing that,” Castro said. “However, with the threats posed by Russia and North Korea, coupled with the reckless behavior of this administration and their failure to invest in economic opportunity for the American people, at this time I believe I can best continue that work by focusing on my duties in the House Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees.”

Castro was seen as a possible challenger to O’Rourke in the race for Sen. Ted Cruz’s seat. O’Rourke declared he was running for the Senate seat in late March.

Castro had blown past multiple deadlines he set for himself to announce if he planned on running for the Senate. He thanked his family for their support and his plan now is to continue working for the people of his district.

“This is just the beginning, so keep it up. Our work is just getting started. I’ll keep traveling this state to help any candidate for any office who is willing to stand up for Texas and create a brighter future for all Americans,” Castro said. “During President Barack Obama’s farewell speech, he asked us once more to believe; not in his ability to create change, but in OURS. Positive change can only happen if we make it happen. I look forward to doing my part.”
