Mark Zuckerberg open to regulation if it’s the ‘right regulation’

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told senators Tuesday that his company is open to regulation, as long as it’s the right regulation.

The issue came up in a joint hearing between the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee about data privacy concerns and foreign efforts to use Zuckerberg’s huge social media company to influence U.S. elections. Those issues have raised the prospect of regulating the company, an issue that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., raised directly with Zuckerberg.

“You welcome regulation?” Graham asked. “European style?”

“They get some of it right,” Zuckerberg said, to laughs.”I think the real question as the Internet becomes more important in people’s lives is what is the right regulation, not whether there should be or not,” he added, without any further explanation.

Europe is known for having some of the toughest privacy standards for social media and tech companies.

“Europe was ahead on this,” Facebook’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, said in a recent interview the Financial Times.
