WATCH: Rand Paul introduces amendment to eliminate Fauci’s job

Sen. Rand Paul introduced an amendment on Monday proposing the elimination of Dr. Anthony Fauci‘s role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the creation of three new institutes to replace it.

“To ensure that ineffective, unscientific lockdowns and mandates are never foisted on the American people ever again, I’ve introduced this amendment to eliminate Dr. Anthony Fauci’s position as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and divide his power into three separate new institutes,” Paul said in a press release.

“We’ve learned a lot over the past two years, but one lesson in particular is that no one person should be deemed ‘dictator-in-chief,'” he added. “No one person should have unilateral authority to make decisions for millions of Americans.”

Under Paul’s amendment, Fauci’s organization would be divided into three institutes: the “National Institute of Allergic Diseases,” the “National Institute of Infectious Diseases,” and the “National Institute of Immunologic Diseases.”

Directors of these institutes would serve five-year terms and be appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Fauci and Paul have repeatedly clashed throughout the pandemic, with the most recent spat being in January.

“Dr. Fauci, the idea that a government official like yourself would claim [that you] unilaterally represent science and that any criticism of you is criticism of science itself is quite dangerous,” Paul said, referencing a statement Fauci made conflating criticism of himself to criticism of science.

“Central planning, whether it be of the economy or of science, is risky because of the fallibility of the planner,” he added.

Fauci shot back that Paul’s criticisms are purely political.

“So I would like to make something clear to the committee. He’s doing this for political reasons,” he said.

He also claimed that Paul was risking his safety with his messaging, citing threats against himself and his family.
