D.C.’s ‘Real Housewives’ a reality, Bravo confirms

Washington’s worst-kept secret is out of the bag. Well, for the most part.

We’ve all known they were in town, but Bravo finally made it official Tuesday: “The Real Housewives of D.C.” is in production, with the show set to premiere next fall.

Bravo scouted Washington for its reputation as the mecca of power and politics. The television network sought women with discriminating taste and a penchant for cultural gatherings, galas and fabulous fundraisers.

The cast members might not represent your typical D.C. residents, but they do own the title of most connected. With their political relationships binding them, these movers and shakers will give us a glimpse into the households of some of D.C.’s most elite.

Although a representative with Bravo claims the network hasn’t confirmed the cast, production clearly is under way. The ladies already were spotted filming at the grand opening party of Ted Gibson’s new salon in Chevy Chase.

Names have been flying around for months, but we are finally banking on the following ladies: Lisa Wernick Spies, wife of Republican fundraiser Charlie Spies; Mary Schmidt Amons, socialite and founder of the District Sample Sale; Lynda Erkiletian, owner of Washington’s premier modeling agency; Michaele Salahi, former model and wife of Tareq Salahi of Oasis Winery and America’s Polo Cup; and Mai Abdo, wife of Jim Abdo of Abdo Development and listed among Washingtonian’s best-dressed women.

We’re willing to bet that whether they are lunching in Georgetown or rubbing shoulders at weekly galas, these ladies will be sure to make a splash on the D.C. scene.

But will the show provide a reflection of the inner Washingtonian social network, or will the cameras thwart politically incorrect comments and incite staged performances in the most scripted town east of Hollywood?

If it’s anything like the series’s other installments (New York, New Jersey, Orange County and Atlanta), then, well …
