Alexandria dropped plans to charge handicapped drivers to park and will continue to provide those drivers with four hours of free parking at the city’s metered spaces.
The City Council voted on Tuesday to maintain the existing regulations and will also consider developing a pilot program of 12-hour parking permits in metered zones. The council’s vote marks a complete turnaround from previous plans to charge handicapped drivers to pay standard fees at meters.
The pilot program could provide a long term parking solutions for disabled drivers who work in Alexandria but don’t have access to off-street parking near their work. The city may charge a fee for the permits to cover the program costs.
