Mattea Roach has become one of the greatest Jeopardy! contestants of all time. Roach is on a 17-game winning streak as of the most recent episode. Her most recent victory was her closest yet, winning by only $1 over her closest competitor. She is only 23 years old and is ranked No. 8 all-time in consecutive wins on the show. So far, she has won $396,182 on the popular trivia game show. NBC News praised Roach’s impressive accomplishments with a recent tweet, but instead of celebrating her brilliance, the tweet rejoiced over her sexual orientation.

“The 23-year-old lesbian tutor from Toronto has amassed a total of $320,081, the most by a Canadian contestant in Jeopardy!” the NBC News tweet read.
It is puzzling how NBC News would know this and why it would put that information in a tweet. Why is Roach’s sexual orientation relevant in any way? Does being a lesbian make her superior in trivia? Does it grant her magical memory retention powers that mere mortal heterosexual contestants do not have?
Wasn’t the point of all of this gay awareness to promote equality? What is equal about promoting a game show contestant’s sexuality when discussing her winning streak? Should the next winner that isn’t homosexual be lauded specifically for his or her heterosexuality? If a heterosexual achieves the longest winning streak in the game show’s history, should there be a tweet celebrating that? Or are the social media people at NBC News just shocked that a lesbian could achieve such intelligence and excellence at trivia while being attracted to the same sex?
Roach’s sexual orientation is not an achievement, and it has no bearing on her intelligence. But we get the propaganda because this is all part of the culture war in the country today. To gay activists, Roach’s intelligence isn’t important, just the fact that she is attracted to women. Why not celebrate her achievements and skills instead of making her part of someone’s propaganda war?
