Success can’t buy D.C. United’s Davies love

A market for Charlie Davies hasn’t materialized. D.C. United hoped and expected that by protecting the out-of-favor forward in last month’s MLS expansion draft, it would have a chance to get something in return, even though it decided not to purchase his contract outright from French club Sochaux.

As it turns out, after his yearlong loan in Washington, no one is purchasing Davies. On Christmas Eve, his agent told MLSSoccer.com that he’s headed back to Sochaux, the same team he needed so badly to leave behind last winter for a fresh start.

Davies still could land elsewhere in Europe, Mexico or MLS — D.C. United still owns his rights — but for now, his 11 goals last season have amounted to little domestically or overseas.

Once seemingly on track to work his way back into U.S. national team contention, the 25-year-old has been reduced simply to fighting for his professional career. And with no other options, that battle will take him back to France.
