A Secret Service agent shot a male subject carrying a firearm on Friday after he approached an outer perimeter of the White House complex and did not respond to several warnings to stop and drop the firearm, the Secret Service said Friday evening.
The event prompted a temporary lockdown of the White House, one that was quickly lifted after it was confirmed the area was secure.
“When the subject failed to comply with the verbal commands, he was shot once by a Secret Service agent and taken into custody,” an agency spokesman said in a statement.
Secret Service officers administered medical aid to the subject and the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department transported him to an area hospital for medical treatment. The agency recovered a firearm at the scene.
At no time did the subject access the White House, and no law enforcement personnel or innocent bystanders were injured, according to a government official.
President Obama was not in the White House at the time, and was golfing at Andrews Air Force Base. Vice President Joe Biden was in the White House complex, and his office said he was secured during the lockdown, the AP reported.
The shooting was reported on West Executive Ave., according to the Park Police.
The incident occurred at 3:06 p.m. and Secret Service officers placed the White House on lockdown. It was lifted around 4:15 p.m. Eastern time.
“No one within or associated with the White House was injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for. The president has been made aware of the situation,” according to a White House official.
