The House Intelligence Committee asked the White House on Friday to hand over any “White House recordings or memoranda of Comey’s conversations exist now or have in the past,” just moments after President Trump said he would soon say more about whether any tape recordings exist.
Reps. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who are leading the investigation into Russia’s cyber hacks during the 2016 election and also Trump’s firing of Comey, asked White House Counsel Don McGahn for that information.
Trump suggested on Twitter in May that there is a tape of his private talks with Comey, which Comey also outlined in a memo he later leaked to the media. And on Friday, Trump said he would explain that remark “in the very near future.”
Conaway and Schiff want answers from Comey and McGahn by June 23.
Comey, during testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee Thursday, would not say definitively that he would turn over the memo, which he said he gave to a friend and asked it to be leaked to the press “because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel.”
