WATCH: Winsome Sears says ‘no’ to ‘pandemic amnesty,’ cites existing problems

Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R-VA) responded on Tuesday to teachers union President Randi Weingarten’s plea for “pandemic amnesty.”

The president of the American Federation of Teachers shared an article titled “Let’s Declare a Pandemic Amnesty” on Twitter Monday, adding that she agrees with the author. The piece urges readers to forgive “the hard calls that people had no choice but to make with imperfect knowledge.”

“This is what they do,” Sears explained on Fox and Friends. “She was one of the major proponents of closing our schools and unfortunately, most of these Democrat governors listened to her and did exactly that.”

“And now they are saying ‘oh, you know, just forget about it.’ No, the problems are existing where our children did not learn,” she continued.

She stressed that parents increasingly want to “take back education” and that “we are going to do that because we’re going to elect different leaders so that we can get full responsibility again.”

“Our children don’t get do-overs. They have one shot at childhood and then after that they have to pay for it. There is a world out there that is not waiting for them,” said Sears.

She further explained that China is beating the United States in test scores, sounding the alarm that something must be done. “We are taking back our country. We’re taking charge,” she continued.

Sears also brought up teachers abandoning unions, saying “most of these teachers don’t want this woke stuff either.”

“They don’t want to be teaching gender policy and all of that. They just want to teach the children. That’s what they went to school for. They have a love for it,” she explained.

According to her, Virginia is going to introduce a bill in 2023 to allow parents to choose the best education option for their child.

“Whether that’s to remain in public schools or home school or private school, whatever it is you want to do,” she said.
