Four of five regulars play at least 33 mpg
The mass exodus of players from Georgetown over the past two seasons hasn’t yet affected this year’s top line.
It’s the bottom line that remains a question, as the Hoyas (12-2, 2-1 Big East) have been forced into a burn rate among starters that raises alarm bells when compared to other teams in one of the country’s toughest conferences.
Four of Georgetown’s five starters — Greg Monroe, Chris Wright, Austin Freeman and Jason Clark — average at least 33 minutes per game. Only Connecticut and Notre Dame even come close to matching that shallow of a player pool. In contrast, the Seton Hall Pirates (10-5, 1-3) are one of the Big East’s deepest teams.
Last weekend the Georgetown bench was outscored by its UConn counterpart, 21-4.
“People talk about depth,” said Hoyas head coach John Thompson III after his reserves didn’t a score a single point in a win over St. John’s last month. “But the guys they have coming off the bench are just as good, if not better, than the guys they have out there first.”
At 20.8 minutes per contest, Hollis Thompson (3.9 ppg. 2.6 rpg) is Georgetown’s only regular reserve. Sophomore Henry Sims and freshman Jerrelle Benimon have seen barely six minutes apiece in each Georgetown’s first four conference games.
