Police chiefs call on Chicago prosecutor to resign amid Smollett controversy

The leader of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police and police chiefs from suburbs in Cook County, Ill., called for Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s resignation Thursday.

During a press conference, Chicago FOP President Kevin Graham said she should quit, not just for dropping charges against actor Jussie Smollett, but also for a long record of poor prosecutorial conduct.

“Ms. Foxx needs to resign and she should do it quickly,” Graham said. “This is not just about Jussie Smollett. This is about many cases in the Cook County system that have gone unprosecuted or having charges reduced.”

“Mrs. Foxx’s lack of prosecution has cost our members and police officers across this county a tremendous amount of problems,” he added.

Steven Stelter, of the West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association, reiterated Graham’s sentiment, saying that Foxx’s policies are “hurting and harming” not only citizens of Cook County, but also police officers.

The blowback comes after Foxx decided to drop charges against Smollett, who stars in the show “Empire.” Smollett was arrested in February for allegedly faking a hate crime against himself for his own monetary gain. Foxx unexpectedly said she was dropping all charges against the actor last month, causing outrage among many at both the city and national level.

President Trump has asked investigators to examine the case at the federal level for potential charges.
