A cult leader who will soon be standing trial for the murder of her two children was seen in an Idaho court smiling and giggling throughout proceedings.
Lori Vallow appeared in Fremont County Court on Tuesday as her defense lawyers attempted to file motions in her favor. She is charged with two counts of murder, grand theft, and three counts of conspiracy involving her children JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Judge Steven Boyce denied Vallow’s lawyer’s motion filed to object to the timeliness of the trial but took the counsel’s objection to the conspiracy charges under advisement, which could alter those charges in the future.

As Boyce delivered his ruling, Vallow was seen smirking and even giggling to herself. Vallow has been in custody at the Madison County Jail since April after being deemed competent to stand trial. This was a change to a previous ruling that found her incompetent to stand trial in May 2021.

Vallow was also seen wearing a ring on her wedding finger in homage to her marriage to doomsday preacher Chad Daybell, who is facing similar charges separately. The two were originally charged together, but Daybell’s lawyers managed to separate the trials despite Vallow’s efforts to lump them together, with her lawyers referring to her as “Mrs. Daybell” throughout preliminary hearings. During the most recent hearing, her lawyers referred to her as “Mrs. Vallow.”
Daybell and Vallow became leaders of a cult of doomsday preppers in late 2019, after Daybell had written several books on the topic. The remains of Vallow’s children JJ and Tylee were found buried in shallow graves in Daybell’s backyard in June 2020.

Vallow’s late husband, Charles Vallow, claimed Vallow believed she was sent by God to lead people during the second coming of Jesus Christ in his divorce filing against her. He claimed she warned him if he got in her way, she would kill him. He was shot to death by her Vallow’s late brother Alex Cox.
The trial is set to begin in January.
