Not a single government official truly believes that continued coronavirus restrictions are necessary — not even the president of the United States.
President Joe Biden was seen walking through a ritzy Washington, D.C., restaurant maskless over the weekend, in direct violation of the district’s mask mandate, which hasn’t even been respected by its own author, Mayor Muriel Bowser.
As the video below shows, first lady Jill Biden was also mask-free.

It should not matter whether Biden wears a mask at all. Nearly 70% of D.C.’s population has been vaccinated, and death rates are remarkably low. The coronavirus pandemic is no longer a pandemic in D.C., and it is ridiculous to continue acting like it is.
Unfortunately for Biden, D.C.’s officials insist on doing just that, at least for public consumption. Bowser recently extended D.C.’s state of emergency into 2022, all so that she can continue to impose COVID-19-related restrictions and rake in federal funds. Her mask mandate is still in effect as well, which means the restaurant that hosted Biden, Fiola Mare, could be fined for failing to enforce the mandate and ask the president to wear his while walking through the restaurant.
Biden won’t face a single consequence for his negligence because, as we’ve learned over and over again this past year and a half, the only people who are required to follow the rules are the people who aren’t important enough to break them. Biden did not have to wear a mask, but his Secret Service agents did. Celebrities at the Met Gala didn’t have to wear masks, but the servers who waited on their tables did. A-list actors at the Emmy Awards ceremony didn’t have to wear masks, but the photographers taking their pictures did.
At what point do everyday citizens decide that enough is enough? (Note that in some states, they already have.)
If the president can’t be bothered to abide by D.C.’s restrictions, why should anyone else?
Business owners ought to stop enforcing rules that clearly only apply to little people. If government officials object, tell them you’re just following Biden’s example.
