The Huckaboom estimates his chances (ap photo)
With President Obama polling very badly (38 percent, Politico?) and prospects for a happy economic turnaround any time soon looking moribund at best, 2012 could be a more competitve scenario for Republicans than anticipated. But — who?
The latest Gallup poll of the usual suspects finds Mitt Romney with 19 percent, Sarah Palin with 16 percent and Mike Huckabee with 12 percent. What else ya got?
Newt Gingrich, who has been menacing the field with intermittent threats about running, has 9 percent and eek — Alex Conant, what is up? — Ron Paul has 7 percent to Tim Pawlenty’s three percent. Beltway favorite (well, after the Huckaboom) dark horse Rick Santorum has a sorrowful 2 percent — but he could still surge.
Notably, 11 percent had no opinion. Waiting for someone better to show up? Time is running out. Meanwhile, if Obama can keep his overall approval near the 50 percent mark, he’s probably good for another term.
