Fairfax explores possible links between Springfield killings

Fairfax police are investigating whether two recent homicides of elderly women in the county’s Springfield area are connected.

Marion Newman, a 74-year-old living on the 7100 block of Reservoir Road, was found dead Tuesday. This follows the Aug. 15 death of Marion Marshall, a 72-year-old woman who lived close to Newman.

“We’re looking into the fact that they are some similarities about the two,” said Fairfax police spokeswoman Officer Keela Lowry. “We’re not saying the two are connected.”

Fairfax police on Wednesday afternoon urgedresidents to make sure doors were locked and to be on the lookout for anything unusual.

Both women died from unspecified trauma, according to official accounts of the incidents.

Adding to the eerie similarities between the two incidents is the fact both victims shared the same first name.

“That could be coincidental,” Lowry cautioned, but said police are pursuing all possible leads.
