The District has pulled out of a $8.7 million contract to buy two new streetcars, but it’s not clear what that means for the timing of the much-delayed line.
The city had reached a deal in December with United Streetcar LLC to buy two streetcars for $8.7 million.
But, as the Washington Business Journal first reported on Wednesday, the city backed out after questions were raised by another bidder.
“The selection has been rescinded,” District Department of Transportation spokesman John Lisle told The Washington Examiner. “The solicitation continues and we are determining our course of action.”
He declined to comment on whether the move would further delay the streetcar line that would run along H Street and Benning Road in Northeast D.C. The line was supposed to start running in July 2013, the latest start date after multiple delays.
The city already has three other rail cars that it ordered in 2005, waiting in storage. But it recently had to increase the contract for storing them because it was taking so long to finalize the streetcar line.
