Eleanor Roosevelt junior goalkeeper Wendy Balogun has verbally committed to play soccer at Maryland.
Balogun, an All-Examiner selection last fall, said she wanted to stay close to her family and be part of an improving program.
“I figured I’d come into a program that is building rather than one that is already big,” said Balogun. “I want to be the player to make the difference.”
Balogun allowed just six goals all season in leading the Raiders to the 4A South final. She spent the past week training with the U.S. national under-17 team in Sunrise, Fla., and started in the net in two matches against Germany last month.
At Maryland, Balogun will compete with another Washington-area product, Chantilly (Va.) senior goalkeeper Mary Casey, who signed with the Terrapins earlier this spring.
