A “super fog” early Thursday morning led to five crashes between 17 cars and semi-trucks across an 18-mile stretch of Florida highway, which caused three deaths.
The Florida Highway Patrol shut down Interstate 95 following the events. The patrol has kept the highway closed in both directions in the New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater area.
One of those who died was a southbound driver towing a motorcycle. The driver’s SUV was sandwiched between two tractor-trailers. One of the tractor-trailer drivers along with a driver caught in an 11-car pileup going northbound died as well.

The crashes caused massive delays, with so many people discussing I-95 online that it began trending on Twitter. Many pointed to a “super fog” event, which was caused by a mix of smoke and moisture in the area.
“Unfortunately, super fog contributed to the incident on I-95 in Volusia Co early this AM,” Melbourne’s National Weather Service tweeted Thursday. “With super fog, visibility is lowered to [less than] 10ft.”
Unfortunately, super fog contributed to the incident on I-95 in Volusia Co early this AM. With super fog, visibility is lowered to <10ft. It has caused several large pileups, namely on I-4 near Davenport (2008) & on I-75 S of Gainesville (2012). Our thoughts are with the victims. pic.twitter.com/NLHouCt1hc
