House GOP accuses Treasury of obstructing investigation into Biden family’s business deals

The House Oversight Committee is accusing the Treasury Department of “operating in bad faith” as the GOP investigates the Biden family’s finances.

House Republicans are seeking suspicious activity reports on “unusual foreign or high-dollar transactions” of the president’s family as it scrutinizes the business dealings of Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. The reported are flagged by financial institutions to the Treasury Department and could provide insight into the GOP’s yearslong allegations that Hunter Biden benefited from his father holding political office.

“During the Committee’s dialogue with Treasury, you have made several excuses for Treasury’s delay regarding this production,” Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said in a Monday letter. “Given the amount of time that has passed since our initial request and Treasury’s inability to provide a projected timeframe when the SARs will be produced, the Committee believes Treasury may be delaying its production to hinder our investigation and operating in bad faith.”

The Oversight Committee is inviting Treasury Department officials to testify at a March 10 hearing about the delay in providing the documentation. It’s unclear if the department will cooperate.

Comer’s letter outlines multiple instances in which Republicans have requested cooperation, including five times since the beginning of the new Congress. Since the GOP didn’t control the committees before January, federal agencies had little incentive to acquiesce to its requests before then.

House Judiciary Committee Republicans say they’ve faced similar stonewalling from the Department of Justice as Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) requests information on President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
