Sen. Raphael Warnock pushed for gun control and expanding voting laws in the wake of the Atlanta spa shootings last week.
“This shooter was able to kill all of these folks the same day he purchased a firearm,” Warnock said on Sunday during an appearance on Meet The Press before tying the shooting to expanded voting.
“Right now, what is our legislature doing? … [Preventing] people from being able to vote the same day they register,” he said, referring to Georgia’s state legislature.
“That suggests a distortion in values when you can buy a gun and create this much carnage and violence on the same day, but if you want to exercise your right to vote as an American citizen, the same legislature that should be focused on this is busy erecting barriers,” he said.

“This is the reason why we’ve got to stand up for voting rights in our country,” Warnock said. “We’ve got to make sure that people from diverse backgrounds with their life experience, that they bring this to the great debate about the direction of our country. That’s why we’ve got to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.”

Warnock’s comments come after eight people were shot and killed at three spas in Atlanta on March 16. The majority of the victims were of Asian descent and women.
Suspect Robert Aaron Long has since been charged with eight counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault.
