Christie in N.H.: ‘There’s no such thing as a level playing field’

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has made more visits to New Hampshire than any other presidential candidate remaining on either side of the aisle and continued his three-day bus tour of the Granite State on Monday.

Christie held several public events, including a veterans’ town hall in Pelham, as part of an effort to tout a veterans coalition that his campaign rolled out. The governor’s message included focusing on the contrast between himself and President Obama, whose administration has sought to “level the playing field.” Christie said he hates the phrase.

“I have to tell you the truth, I played sports most of my life, I never played on a level playing field. Ever. There’s no such thing as a level playing field,” Christie said. “You level it yourself. You level it through your effort. You level it through your wits. You level it through your camaraderie. You level it through the people you surround yourself with and what they believe in. We need to go back to a country again with a president of the United States that talks about the intrinsic value of work.”

Christie hopes all of his work pounding the pavement in New Hampshire will soon pay off. The governor had three public events scheduled on his bus tour on Monday and also planned appearances on CBS Evening News and Fox News’ “On the Record.”

Governors Paul LePage of Maine and Larry Hogan of Maryland joined their fellow governor on the stump this weekend to boost his support, and Christie appears to have gained some traction. He ranks third in Real Clear Politics’ average of New Hampshire polling, behind Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida who tied for second place. Christie finishes fifth in the Washington Examiner‘s newest GOP presidential power rankings.
