Protests erupted Friday in St. Louis, Mo., after a judge determined former police officer Jason Stockley was not guilty of first-degree murder in a 2011 case involving the shooting death of a black motorist, Anthony Lamar Smith.
Thirteen people have been arrested during the protests and four police officers were assaulted, according to CNN.
After the verdict was released, police say peaceful protests began to form outside the courthouse. Some prayed while others held signs and chanted “No justice, no peace.”
However, the protests turned more violent when a police vehicle windshield was smashed by demonstrators. Law enforcement responded by saying violence would not be permitted.
“While we support all first amendent rights, violence & destruction of property is not free speech. Violators subject to arrest. #stlverdict,” the St. Louis Police Department tweeted Friday.

Protestors headed to the police headquarters to request police resignations and an economic boycott of St. Louis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Some of the police officers encountered protesters throwing rocks and water bottles.
“Rocks & water bottles have been thrown at our officers throughout the day. Officers used great restraint. #STLVerdict,” the police department tweeted.

The acting police chief praised the efforts of his officers in dealing with the demonstrations.
“I am proud of my officers,” Lt. Col. Lawrence O’Toole also said. “They have used great restraint today.”
Stockley shot Smith during a suspected drug deal after claiming to see Smith reach for a gun. Stockley pleaded innocent and said he was acting in self-defense. Stockley was acquitted Friday.
