The View’s Whoopi Goldberg questioned what Rush Limbaugh has done to earn the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he was awarded during President Trump’s State of the Union address.
Trump honored the conservative radio host at his annual address to both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, a day after Limbaugh announced he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.
Goldberg, who began the conversation by explaining she wasn’t happy he was sick, demurred that there were other people the president honored who were more deserving of the award. She added that Limbaugh didn’t reach the achievements of previous recipients.
“I’m sorry, I thought that the Medal of Honor — Freedom — was supposed to go to people who actually did stuff,” Goldberg commented before co-host Joy Behar named previous recipients Rosa Parks and Mother Theresa.
“I didn’t understand. You got a Tuskegee Airman sitting there,” she continued. “And how about if you’re going to give the Medal of Freedom to someone who actually has made differences in the country and done all kind of stuff, how about giving it to Elijah Cummings’s wife as a thank you for all of his service.”
Co-host Meghan McCain interjected to point out that Limbaugh’s radio show, which he’s been hosting for more than three decades, has an audience of approximately 30 million people, which is 10-times the average audience for The View.
“But what has he done that merits the Medal of …” Goldberg responded, to which McCain countered, “He’s completely changed the paradigm of radio.”
The hosts went on to accuse Limbaugh of being “racist and misogynistic,” while Behar suggested that the president would present the award to two of his allies, Roger Stone and Steve Bannon.
