Rep. Michelle Bachmann, R-Minn., refused to commit to participating in the Donald Trump debate, while taking care to note that Newt Gingrich is the only presidential candidate to confirm his attendance, although she acknowledged that she likes Trump personally.
“Good question,” Bachmann said when she was asked, at the end of her appearance on Morning Joe, if she’d participate in the debate. “We haven’t made the decision, we’re trying to figure it out,” she hedged, explaining that the debate “comes right before the Iowa caucuses.”
“I think only one has accepted so far, which is Newt Gingrich — I actually like Donald Trump,” she added. “I think he’s a great guy.”
“We may [attend the debate],”Bachmann concluded.
Debates are often scheduled for the days immediately before an early state election. South Carolina, for instance, has two debates currently on the calendar for the week of the First in the South primary.
Bachmann has been too cozy with Trump — even participating in a fundraising teletownhall with Trump — to skip the debate for any of the substantive reasons given by Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, or Jon Huntsman.
