Jarvis Hayes is optimistic the Wizards could add a player next season who can make a difference.
Himself.
“I think I could make an impact,” Hayes said. “I just have to get right this summer and stay healthy.”
Which has been difficult for him to do.
Hayes is recovering from surgery to repair a fractured right patella that ended his season after he played in only 21 games. He said the fracture has healed and he’ll be ready for training camp in October. He’s focusing on shooting drills and conditioning.
The 6-foot-8 guard/forward has made a limited impact the past two seasons, missing a combined 89 games because of injuries. When healthy, he provides the Wizards a big guard with a reliable jump shot who can score and play defense.
“We’ll be a lot harder to guard with me on the floor,” said Hayes, who has averaged 9.8 points in 145 games.
His goal this season is simple.
“Stay healthy,” said Hayes, who is signed through 2007. “I haven’t tapped into my potential yet so hopefully I can do that this year.”
