Former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said President Trump was as responsible as Republican Gov. Brian Kemp for the state of Georgia reopening.
Kemp announced last week that many businesses could reopen despite a significant coronavirus outbreak in the state. Trump condemned the decision and noted that he believes it was too early for the state to reopen. Abrams told Meet the Press on Sunday that the president’s condemnation of Kemp did not matter.
“I give Donald Trump zero credit for backing away from this because he incited it with his ‘liberation of the states‘ narrative,” Abrams said. “I think Brian Kemp was responding to that call and decided to wrong-headedly move forward, and unfortunately, as a result, he found himself crossways with the president, with Mike Pence nodding pathetically at the same time about ingesting Clorox as the president gave more false information to the public.”
She added, “I think all three of these men have misserved Georgia and misserved the country.”
Abrams has been floated as a potential running mate for Joe Biden in 2020. She lost to Kemp in 2018 during her bid for the governorship.
