The Arlington County Republican Committee this week selected its candidates for county elections in November.
Mike McMenamin and Joseph Warren are running for the two open seats on the Arlington County Board. Mark Kelly is campaigning to be clerk of Arlington’s Circuit Court, a position vacated by the retirement of Clerk David Bell.
“I think we offer the people of Arlington a great slate of candidates,” committee Chairman Rafael Bejar said. “We provide an alternate position to the existing County Board.”
McMenamin and Warren are campaigning for the seats of Chairman Paul Ferguson and Vice Chairman Walter Tejada, both Democrats. Ferguson is not seeking re-election, but is running against Kelly for the clerk’s position. Tejada is campaigning for re-election.
McMenamin, a lawyer and member of the county’s Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission, ran for the county board seat of Chris Zimmerman last year.
He received 19,119 votes to Zimmerman’s 43,047.
“I think I’ve got a really good shot this year, otherwise I wouldn’t do it,” McMenamin said.
McMenamin said his campaign will be similar to last year’s, focusing on concerns about neglected infrastructure and fiscal responsibility.
Warren is a member of the county’s Transportation Commission, McMenamin said.
Kelly was chief of staff to the former Rep. Jim Ryun of Kansas for six years.
“The clerk has hundreds of statutory responsibilities, and I want to put my years of day-to-day management experience to work for the people of Arlington,” Kelly said in a statement.
His platform includes installing a new online land record filing system and improving the clerk’s Web site.
