MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — The Mitchell City Council has voted to ban texting while driving in the city.

The Monday night vote was 4-3 in favor of the ban. Mayor Ken Tracy says the goal isn’t to issue tickets, but to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving.

Mitchell joins Sioux Falls, Brookings, Watertown, Vermillion and Huron in implementing local bans. A proposed statewide ban failed in the Legislature earlier this year.
