Helping women get ahead in business and gain self-reliance is what Suited to Succeed is about. STS was founded nine years ago by a group of men and women who saw a need to supply professional business attire to Baltimore-area women who were in training programs.
Mary Somers, who served as co-chair for the sixth annual fundraiser recently at the lovely Lyric, is also one of the STS?s co-founders.
Talk about a silent auction. Holy moly! Items ranged from Anne Klein designer shoes and sports memorabilia (including a life-size cutout of Cal Ripken) to gems galore and even a six-month membership from Penny?s Chocolates for a Chocolate of the Month.
All the bidding made a lot of people hungry, and the folks at Noah?s on the Side in Ellicott City did not disappoint. Easy edibles prepared by chefs/owners Sharon and Russell Braitsch had the crowd nibbling away ? a crowd that included state Sen. Lisa A. Gladden, who also served as a co-chair; Fox 45?s Patrice Harris; radio and TV guy Steve Rouse; Doncaster?s Salli J. Ward; STS board and staff members Jackie Haynes, Karyn Henry, Carla Hayden, Ginny Robertson and Bank of America volunteers Lorraine Percy and Alice Smith. Alice was such a trooper, helping the cause by serving some of Noah?s treats to many of the guests.
Author Mary O?Hare Dumas said it best: “Confidence is the hinge on the door to success,” and the members and supporters of STS realize that it?s more than just a suit, it?s an opportunity.

SHAME
Baltimore City just got finished spending a half-million dollars for a California firm to come up with the slogan “Get In On It” to hype Baltimore. Another $700,000 went to make commercials. Well, I would suggest that Mayor O?Malley?s office and the Baltimore police should try to “Get In On It” and be nicer to our visitors. I bet the city lost at least a million bucks in public relations last week, as guests from all over the country came to Johns Hopkins University?s commencement ceremonies, only to return to find their cars gone ? as in towed. Couldn?t we have been a little more lenient at the commencement of one of the country?s most prestigious universities?
