Two women locked inside Metro station

Two women were trapped inside an Orange Line Metro station early Tuesday morning, after a station manager locked the gates before their train arrived, according to Metro.

The incident happened at the end of Monday’s service on the Orange Line as the system closed down. The women were stuck inside the Cheverly station for about 15 minutes, according to Metro.

The station manager apparently misread the time of the last train arrival, according to Metro’s preliminary investigation, thinking it was at 12:30 a.m. But a final train passed through at 12:46 a.m. with the two women aboard.

They called 911, but before transit police could arrive another Metro employee opened the gate to release them.

“It was an unfortunate situation for which we apologize,” Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel said. “The women did the right thing in calling 911.”

The station manager will receive retraining on such issues, he said. — Kytja Weir
