Did Terps get the message?

On the subject of the lackluster play of four of his starters in Sunday’s 64-61 loss to Temple, Maryland coach Gary Williams said the best message he delivered was not at practice on Monday, but the one he sent early in the second half, when he pulled them en masse with the Terps down by 15 points.

“The best message is in the second half when we subbed,” Williams said. “There was a reason for that.”

There was no mistaking Williams’ intent when he benched Adrian Bowie, Cliff Tucker, Sean Mosley and Dino Gregory — who combined for nine points in 90 minutes. With freshmen Terrell Stoglin, Pe’Shon Howard, Haukur Palsson and James Padgett in the game, Maryland erased the deficit before falling in the closing minutes. The reserves combined for 35 points in 74 minutes.

Williams wouldn’t say if he planned to make changes to the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game with UNC Greensboro (0-7).

“We’ll know about 6:15,” Williams said. “And I’m not going to tweet it.”

After averaging 14.8 points in his first six games, Tucker has scored just 10 points in the last three games.

“Cliff has been a streaky player. That is his tendency throughout his career,” Williams said. “I think he can come back and play like the first few games. That’s what I’m depending on.”

Williams isn’t as concerned with Mosley. The junior guard, who shot 50.9 percent last year, is at 39.1 this season and 21.4 from 3-point range.

“There were some people with us last year that allowed him to do certain things,” Williams said. “This year there’s more responsibility on Sean. Teams know him better. He’s got to adjust to that. You don’t worry about Sean in terms of his want.”
