Jim Williams: Medhurst, Navy find home at CSTV

Since being purchased by CBS, College Sports Television has grown and is gaining respect. One of the network’s prized possessions is coverage of the United States Naval Academy.

Meanwhile, Pete Medhurst, a lifelong Anne Arundel County resident and one of the lesser known big broadcasting talents broadcasters in the Mid Atlantic region, is the network’s play-by-play voice for Navy football.

Medhurst has been part of the Navy broadcast and WNAV family since age 18 and was ready for the opportunity.

CSTV executives see Medhurst as a future star and Navy could not be happier with the exposure. CSTV will broadcast every Navy game live except one (Nov. 4 at Duke).

I spoke to Medhurst about getting his break with CSTV.

» On his new role as the voice of Navy football on CSTV: “I have been a part of the coverage team for Navy sports at WNAV. But now to be working with the great producers, directors and technical people working so hard to make every CSTV broadcast look like a network quality broadcast makes me a better play-by-play man and I know the Navy fans nationwide enjoy the telecasts.”

» On Navy’s team: “No one runs the triple option better than Navy does. Coach Paul Johnson has built a system that causes match up problems for almost every team that we face. Opposing teams hate to see Navy because you see it coming but you simply can’t stop it. I look forward to seeing how things go with the Air Force, Rutgers and of course, the Notre Dame game; this team is not going to back down from any team.”

Navy will face Air Force today at 2 p.m. on CSTV. Medhurst will miss this game but will be back in the booth next week when Navy entertains Rutgers.

Medhurst can also be heard doing selected Navy basketball games as well as all lacrosse games on WNAV. Let’s hope we also see this gifted local broadcaster on more CSTV events as well in the coming year.
