Montgomery County police have made an arrest in connection with a 2003 Germantown homicide and are now looking for additional suspects, according to authorities.

Police spokeswoman Lucille Bauer said 42-year-old Alton Charles May, of Clinton, was charged about two months ago in connection with the shooting and remains at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

“We didn’t announce the arrest then because detectives were hopeful they could find additional suspects, and we didn’t want to tip them off,” she told The Examiner on Wednesday. “Well, they’ve given themselves that preset two months and not found anyone else, so they’re asking for the public’s help.”

The victim in the October 2003 case was identified as Grossett Harris, 49, of the 19300 block of Running Cedar Court. Harris’ body was found inside the home, and investigators concluded that he died from a gunshot wound.

Police also learned that the victim was a part-time resident and that his 1992 burgundy Dodge Caravan was missing from the residence.

Bauer said the vehicle was later recovered in the District of Columbia.

May has been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and armed carjacking.

“The reason he’s charged with conspiracy to commit murder is because we don’t believe he acted by himself,” she said.

Bauer wouldn’t elaborate on why police think the crime was committed by numerous attackers.

She said there was no new smoking-gun piece of evidence in the case. Rather, detectives have “been steadily working on this case since it happened.”
