The State Department reissued an Iran travel warning on Friday, and said the signing of the Iran nuclear agreement hasn’t done anything to stop Iran’s government from detaining Americans who travel there.
“Since the United States and Iran reached a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to address the international community’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear program on July 14, 2015, Iran has continued to harass, arrest and detain U.S. citizens, in particular dual nationals,” State said in its notice.
State warned that both Americans and dual national Iranian-Americans need to “carefully consider” the risks of traveling to Iran.
State said the U.S. doesn’t have diplomatic or consular relations with Iran, and thus can’t help protect people in the country. It said the problem can be particularly problematic for dual nationals.
“The Iranian government does not recognize dual citizenship and will not allow the Swiss to provide protective services for U.S. citizens who are also Iranian nationals,” it said.
“Iranian authorities have unjustly detained or imprisoned U.S. citizens, particularly Iranian-Americans, including journalists, businessmen and academics, on charges including espionage and posing a threat to national security,” it added.
State’s new travel alert was an update from the alert it released in early August.
